Located in a former power station right on the banks of the Thames, the Tate Modern is one of the best free art galleries in London. Showcasing Britain’s top modern and contemporary artists, and hosting regular exhibits from international talent, the Tate Modern is not to be missed.

Whether you’re a keen art lover or just looking to pass an afternoon in London, this central gallery is surrounded by food and drink spots and is an iconic cultural spot in the city.

What you should know about Tate Modern London

You’re free to wander the Tate Modern’s impressive Turbine Hall at your own leisure, although some exhibitions do require tickets. You’ll find permanent installations that can be viewed for free in among the temporary showings – but even those you have to pay for will almost certainly be worth your money. In fact, most sell out in advance so you’ll want to get in quick.

During the pandemic, visitors are required to book in timed slots to visit just to keep numbers down. Keep an eye on the Tate Modern website for bookings and more information on when these restrictions are likely to be lifted. If you’re visiting at a particularly quiet time, you’re likely to be let in on the door.
